The following are answers to questions we frequently receive:
What is the Foundation’s mission?
We are committed to empowering families to overcome critical issues and work toward positive change.
Do you only support programs that benefit families?
Our definition of "family" is very broad. Family to us means many things, but primarily it is someone's support network.
What are the Foundation's funding priorities?
Organizations must clearly address one of the following critical issues:
- Behavioral Health
- Youth Violence
- Domestic Abuse
- Childhood Obesity
- Early Childhood Education
- Preparedness for Graduation
- Literacy/Language
- Financial Literacy
- Food
- Shelter
Where is the Mutual of Omaha Foundation's geographic focus area?
Organizations must be located within the Omaha/Council Bluffs metro area.
What are the general conditions that must be met to apply for a grant?
Recipient organizations must have a tax-exempt status under section 501 (c)(3). Preference is given to organizations seeking funding from a broad base of foundations, businesses and individuals.
Are there organizations or projects you will not fund?
In general, the following are not considered eligible for funding from the Mutual of Omaha Foundation:
- endowment funds
- projects of religious denominations or sects, other than eligible educational, health or human service related projects
- support of individuals including education, research or product development
- travel for individuals or groups
- event sponsorships, tickets/tables (to be considered for an event sponsorship, please e-mail a message of intent to: community.affairs@mutualofomaha.com)
- team sponsorships or athletic scholarships
- political actions, candidates or lobbying efforts
- groups, organizations or programs whose principal funding comes from federal, state or local taxes, except for certain activities of the state university system
- requests for civic or commemorative advertising
- social clubs, labor or fraternal organizations
- festival participation
- the creation or maintenance of monuments or memorials
- programs or organizations outside the United States or its territories
Is there a deadline to apply?
Requests are reviewed quarterly. Application deadlines are November 15, February 15, May 15 and August 15.
What is the dollar range of the grant award?
This amount varies depending on the program and need. It may be helpful to review prior grants awarded by the Foundation.
How do I apply?
How often may an organization apply?
As a general rule, organizations with an “active” grant may not apply. An “active” grant is a grant in excess of $10,000 that has been received within the last 12 months. This grant will not be considered “closed” until a final report has been received on the project or organization for which the grant was provided. Organizations are asked to limit their requests to one application per calendar year.
What information is required on an application?
- Name, address and telephone number of the organization and appropriate contact person
- Agency history (including mission)
- Description of program activities and goals
- Board of Directors/Trustees listing
- Total cost of the project
- Amount being sought from the Mutual of Omaha Foundation
- Target population and number of people served by the program for which the grant is being requested
- Budgets for the agency and program
- A list of other sources of support and the amounts and types of committed and pending donations
- An explanation of whether this is an on-going activity or a one-time project
- Inclusion of other groups with which this effort is being coordinated
- Measurement method by which the success or failure of the project will be gauged
Note: The Mutual of Omaha Foundation may, at a later time during the review process, request a copy of the organization’s most recent audited financial statement.
Who do I contact with a grant request?
When could I meet with someone regarding a grant request?
We would prefer to have a grant request submitted prior to scheduling a meeting.
When will I receive a response to my application?
Within two weeks of submitting a grant request, applicants will be notified of the date their request will be reviewed. Communication regarding the outcome of the grant review will be provided within seven days following the review.
Can individuals apply for grants?
The Mutual of Omaha Foundation does not provide funding to individuals.
Does Mutual offer an employee matching gift program for contributions?
Yes, however this program is limited to accredited high schools, colleges and universities and is only matched for donations up to $1,000 per eligible employee to support the general operating budget of the institution.
