At the Mutual of Omaha Foundation, we want to go beyond just addressing the issues that families face – we want to help prevent them. That’s why we have placed a focus on education. We believe that education creates opportunity, enabling individuals to obtain employment and provide a decent living for themselves and their families.
When surveyed, organizations that provide services to those considered at or below the poverty line all agree: if they could address only one issue to break the cycle of poverty in our community, it would be lack of education. Not surprisingly, recent statistics support that idea, revealing that high school dropouts are more likely than graduates to need or rely upon public assistance. And the U.S. Government reports that 70 percent of welfare recipients function at the lowest level of literacy
We feel it is our responsibility to provide children with the tools necessary to succeed in school – ensuring their future success as adults. In order to fulfill that responsibility, we will focus our education grant dollars toward programs that focus on the critical issues of readiness for school, preparedness for graduation and language and literacy proficiency.
